At Interim HealthCare, we believe that professionally-trained hospice volunteers are often the heart of an organization and are a crucial part of our team—they give the gift of their time to those in need. In this volunteer position, you’ll collaborate with our hospice team, as well as provide practical support services to patients and their families.

There are two main types of volunteers at Interim HealthCare: Patient Care Volunteers and Administrative Volunteers.

Patient Care Volunteers

Patient care volunteers are available to help our patients and their families by lending a hand and being a friendly face while visiting. They serve as integral members of our hospice team and work in collaboration with the other team members. In addition to helping with daily tasks, they provide vital support and companionship. Some examples in which patient care volunteers help are:

  • Grocery shopping
  • Transportation to doctor’s appointments
  • Reading
  • Providing respite for the primary caregiver

All patient care volunteers undergo an intensive 5-week training session led by Laura Hanlon, our Volunteer and Bereavement Coordinator. In addition to the many tasks listed above, patient care volunteers can also undertake additional training to become involved with our Pet Therapy program and our 11th Hour program.

Pet Therapy

Pet Therapy Volunteers bring along an animal (dog, cat, bunny, horse, etc.) with them on visits with the patient and their family.

11th Hour Services

11th Hour Volunteers stay with an actively dying patient, providing emotional support to the patient and their family through the end.

Administrative Volunteers

  • Assist with correspondence to families
  • Help with mailings, provide assistance at special events, provide clerical assistance
  • Maintain press clipping books and assist with other special projects as needed

Qualifications for Certification: Good physical health, emotional maturity, sensitivity, and reliability.  Completion of our offered volunteer training program offered or its equivalent. Documentation of tuberculin skin tests required each year.
